Is anodizing cheaper than powder coating?

Your part priced in about 90 seconds, no account.

On this 6061 bracket, Type II anodizing is cheaper by $128.70 at one, Type II anodizing is cheaper by $12.87 at 10, and powder coating is cheaper by $0.65 at 100 pieces. Type II anodizing adds $162.50, $16.25 and $4.29 per part at those quantities; powder coating adds $291.20, $29.12 and $3.64. The finish requirement and lot size decide which route belongs on the quote.

The 6061-T6 aluminum example part

Type II anodize is thin and tied to the aluminum surface; powder is a thicker paint-like film that may hide tool marks and needs cure time. The example part includes a pocket and threaded holes, so masking and post-finish fit are practical concerns even though the base example part does not price them.

How the quantity break works

Both finishes have a lot minimum. A single prototype therefore pays for a vendor invoice that is larger than the per-part line suggests. At 100 pieces, the per-piece charge matters more and the two curves get closer to their catalog rates. A vendor’s color, rack or pretreatment surcharge can move either route.

What the material or process changes

Do not compare only the coating invoice. Anodize may need racking contact or dyed sealing; powder may need blast, masking and a larger cure schedule. If the print requires a cosmetic surface, add prep and inspection as explicit work. The table excludes tax, freight and customer-specific finisher quotes.

How to turn this into a firm quote

Present the buyer with finish, thickness or color, masked areas and acceptance criteria. Then choose the route that meets the function. A transparent line-item estimate avoids the argument that an apparent per-part saving came from omitting real preparation work.

Questions to settle before release

A finish decision should include coating thickness, appearance, masking, cleaning and acceptance sample. Ask whether powder can meet the fit around a bore and whether anodize can meet the color on the chosen alloy. Confirm rack orientation and cure or seal lead time. The two engine routes make the invoice mechanics visible; the drawing and the finisher decide which route is acceptable.

For this anodizing vs powder coating cost estimate, when the job is urgent, show the schedule impact separately from the price. A rush setup, outside-service expedite or second machine may change lead days and cost in different ways. Naming those choices lets the buyer decide what to trade. The base table remains useful because it records the ordinary US small-shop route before urgency is added.

Pricing engine output for the stated Aluminum 6061-T6 CNC milling example part

  • • Material: Aluminum 6061-T6; the US catalog stores its small-lot price and machinability factor.
  • • Process: CNC milling; setup, machine time, deburring and inspection are generated from the example-part geometry.
  • • Markup: 30% default US catalog markup; quantities are 1, 10, 100.
  • • Fictional 4 × 3 × 1 in milled block; no finish or outside process.
  • • Outside finishes: Anodize Type II, clear using the catalog lot minimum and lead time.
  • • These are computed examples, not supplier quotes or market averages.
