How much does a laser-cut steel gusset cost?

The 6 × 4 × 0.25 inch A36 gusset costs $71.76 for one, $15.21 each at 10, and $9.56 each at 100 pieces. Hole pierces, perimeter cutting, deburring and sheet material drive the result; nesting, bending, welding and freight would be separate work.

The A36 plate example part
A gusset’s price is driven by more than its outline. Hole count adds pierce time, thick plate slows the cut and the purchased sheet may be larger than the nested shape. The example part assumes a single part, so it does not credit nesting or charge sorting between different jobs.
How the quantity break works
The first piece pays the program and setup once. At ten and one hundred pieces, the laser cycle repeats while setup is spread across the lot. If the print needs a clean edge, a bevel limit or a no-heat-affected-zone requirement, waterjet may be the better route even when its machine minutes cost more.
What the material or process changes
A36 plate is priced as sheet stock in the catalog. Confirm thickness, mill test report, edge condition and whether the customer expects galvanized or pickled material. Tapping, bending, weld prep, paint and freight are excluded; each should be a named operation when required.
How to turn this into a firm quote
When the buyer sends a DXF, verify scale and revision before quoting. Keep pierces, perimeter and stock assumptions in the estimate so a changed hole pattern or thickness produces a traceable new number.
Questions to settle before release
Verify plate thickness, nesting orientation, edge quality and whether the customer wants a deburred or as-cut edge. Count every pierce, including small holes that may need a slower lead-in. Ask who owns the skeleton and drops after cutting. If the gusset will be welded, include fit-up and mill-scale cleanup. Those choices are the difference between a useful laser estimate and an optimistic perimeter-only number.
For this laser cut gusset cost estimate, use the first production run as a check on this estimate. Capture actual setup minutes, cycle minutes, material weight and outside invoices, then update the shop rate or example part assumption that was wrong. That small feedback loop is more useful than rounding every quote upward. It also gives the next estimator a concrete explanation when the customer asks why a repeat job moved.
For the gusset, count pierces and edge cleanup rather than pricing only the outer perimeter. The final release should preserve the drawing revision, stock source and inspection decision with the computed table.
Pricing engine output for the stated Steel A36 plate sheet cutting example part
- • Material: Steel A36 plate; the US catalog stores its small-lot price and machinability factor.
- • Process: sheet cutting; setup, machine time, deburring and inspection are generated from the example-part geometry.
- • Markup: 30% default US catalog markup; quantities are 1, 10, 100.
- • Fictional 6 × 4 × 0.25 in plate with eight holes and a 20 in perimeter.
- • No outside finish, tax, freight, or customer-specific rate is included.
- • These are computed examples, not supplier quotes or market averages.
