How much does a hydraulic manifold block cost to machine?

Your part priced in about 90 seconds, no account.

A fictional six-port 6061 manifold prices at $676.40 for one, $162.92 each at ten and $99.58 each at 100. The same geometry in 1018 steel gives $168.00 each at ten. Both include stated allowances for port threading, intersection cleanup, plugs and testing; neither number establishes a safe operating pressure.

Six ports create several approach directions

The block finishes at 4 × 3 × 2 inches from 2.25-inch stock. Two 7/16-inch drill passages approach from the top to 1.5-inch depth, two from the side to 2.5-inch depth and two from the end to 3.5-inch depth. Their intersections need a production drawing; the reference schedule defines dimensions for estimating, not a released hydraulic circuit.

The base milling route reads those directions and drilling depths. We then enter twenty lot setup minutes and eight minutes per part at the VMC for threading six ports and cleaning intersections. Those are estimator allowances, not geometry-derived proof that a particular port thread can be cut. Replace them with your tool list and the actual port specification.

Do not omit the work inside the passages

A part can look simple from outside while consuming expensive deep-drilling and burr-removal time. Intersecting passages require a clear cleaning method and inspection access. Quote the method you will use, whether it is accessible hand cleanup, a special tool or an outside process, rather than assuming ordinary edge deburr reaches every intersection.

The example carries twenty testing setup minutes per lot and ten inspection-center minutes per block for plugging, flushing and an assumed pressure-test cycle. Six dollars per part is entered for plugs and test consumables. The inspection rate is $75/hour. Actual test pressure, dwell, fluid, acceptance criteria and containment are intentionally unspecified and must come from an approved requirement before production.

Choose material for service before comparing price

This comparison holds geometry and manual allowances constant. Aluminum and steel use different density, purchased-stock cost and machinability inputs, which changes the engine's stock and cutting contributions. Steel is included as a common alternative, not as a substitute for ductile iron or a guarantee that either material suits the service.

1018 has a lower example dollar-per-pound rate, but heavier stock and slower cutting can erase that advantage. More ports, angled holes, counterbores or a strict cleanliness requirement can also swamp the savings from a less expensive block. Use the price split to identify the lever rather than applying a material multiplier to the entire quote.

The customer needs to see what is delivered: a raw drilled block, a plugged and cleaned manifold or an assembled, tested unit. State whether seals, valves, coatings, certificates and transport are included. Keeping that boundary explicit makes quotes from different shops comparable and keeps a cheap incomplete number from winning by accident.
