A two-pound finished part at 80% finished-to-purchased weight yield consumes 2.5 pounds of stock. Moving from $4 to $5.50 per purchased pound adds $3.75 per part, or $375 for 100 pieces, before any stated handling markup. The result is a proposed adjustment for agreement, not permission to change an accepted order.

Document the material price difference
Use the same grade, form, quantity, freight and certification basis for both prices. The result is a proposed adjustment for review; it does not amend an accepted PO. Handling markup applies only to the difference.
| Item | Result |
|---|---|
| Purchased weight/part | 2.5 lb |
| Direct difference/part | $3.75 |
| Proposed surcharge or credit/part | $3.75 |
| Proposed adjustment/lot | $375.00 |
Compare like-for-like supplier costs
Use the same alloy, temper, form, size, purchase quantity, freight basis and certification scope for base and current price. If the new order changes those conditions, separate their effects instead of calling the whole difference inflation. Attach or retain the supplier offer references and dates. A general metal index can move differently from the shop’s delivered plate or bar quote, so it should not silently replace the agreed purchasing basis. The calculator accepts actual dollars per pound rather than fetching an index.
Use purchased weight rather than shipped weight
The yield percentage converts finished weight to the allocated stock consumed for that part. The default 80% is a scenario input, not a machining yield benchmark. Use the stock calculation or whole-bar yield when there is a large cutoff, remnant or roughing loss. Freight and minimum buys that do not scale with weight may require separate dollar adjustments. If scrap proceeds are credited, apply the same policy to both base and current costs. Handling markup here applies only to the price difference, not the entire old material line.
State approval and the downward rule
Example quote note: Material adjustment proposed from supplier offer [base/date] to [current/date], at [purchased pounds] per part for [quantity]. Adjustment is [amount] per part, subject to written approval before changed work begins. Review accepted POs and existing price agreements before sending that proposal. The selector either floors negative surcharges at zero or shows a corresponding credit when material falls; choose the policy the parties agreed, rather than changing it after seeing the result. Preserve the buyer’s approval with the revised offer.
