A 12 × 8-inch blank fits 35 times on a 48 × 96-inch sheet with half-inch edges and 0.125-inch spacing in a uniform grid. Fifty required pieces need two sheets. At the example $180 per sheet, charging both sheets makes the release’s material cost $7.20 per part.

Rectangular blank yield on a sheet
No mixed orientations, true-shape nesting, common-line cuts or grain constraint is modeled. Whole sheets are charged to this order. Area utilization describes a full repeated nest, not the partly used last sheet.
| Item | Result |
|---|---|
| Original orientation | 35 |
| Rotated 90 degrees | 33 |
| Chosen parts/sheet | 35 |
| Full-sheet area utilization | 72.92% |
| Sheets to purchase | 2 |
| Material charged to order | $360.00 |
| Material per required part | $7.20 |
Understand what the grid can decide
The tool checks a complete grid in the entered orientation and another with every blank rotated ninety degrees, then chooses the larger count. It does not mix orientations in the same sheet or interlock true part profiles. A nesting system can sometimes recover more area, while grain direction, film, clamps and required tabs can reduce the usable layout. Treat this as a quick estimating bound for a rectangular purchased blank, not a released laser program.
Keep the margins and spacing physical
Edge margin is taken from both sides of each sheet dimension. Spacing lies only between neighboring blanks, so the model does not charge an extra gap beyond the final row. Use the machine’s proven allowance for kerf, heat effects, lead-ins and handling rather than setting spacing to zero simply to improve a quote. If grain or cosmetic direction forbids rotation, use the original-orientation result and manually price the corresponding number of sheets instead of relying on the chosen maximum.
Choose who pays for the last sheet
Area utilization describes a full repeated nest, but the purchase calculation rounds the required quantity up to whole sheets. The final sheet may be only partly used. This calculator charges its full delivered price to this order and gives no leftover credit. Your shop can choose a different inventory policy when a reusable drop has a documented home; record that decision so another estimator does not sell the same leftover twice. The output excludes laser time, deburring, brake operations, hardware and finish, which belong in the rest of the routing.
