Calculate brake work from the setup and the touches

Your part priced in about 90 seconds, no account.

Four bends at twelve seconds each plus half a minute of extra handling make 1.3 run minutes per part. Two fifteen-minute tool setups at $80 per hour cost $40 per lot. For 25 pieces, the operation costs $83.33 and sells for $108.33 with 30% markup, or $4.33 each.

Press-brake setup and bend labor

Seconds per bend include the repeated bend cycle. Handling is extra work outside that cycle. No sheet, cutting, deburr, hardware, weld or finish cost is included. Increase measured time for large parts, flips or two-person lifts.

Time a bend as the operator performs it

Seconds per bend should reflect a repeated production touch: position against the backgauge, actuate the bend and move to the next step under the convention you measured. Handling adds work outside that repeated cycle, such as loading a heavy blank or carrying the finished piece to a rack. If the measured seconds already include that movement, leave extra handling at zero. A large panel may need two operators; increase the effective cost rate or quote the second person explicitly rather than quietly doubling the bend count.

Count tooling setups at the lot level

The default two tool setups are two distinct tooling arrangements required for this routing. A staged tool set that makes all bends without a change may need only one. Include program preparation, loading tooling, checking angles and approving the first piece in the setup minutes where appropriate. Tooling purchase or custom die manufacture is not part of this labor-only calculation. Add it as NRE and agree whether the customer owns the resulting tool.

Check the part before applying a per-bend price

Four bends on a small bracket do not represent four bends on a tall enclosure with collisions or cosmetic protection. Confirm available tooling, bend sequence, reliefs, material thickness and grain expectations before treating the time as repeatable. The tool excludes flat-pattern development, cutting, deburring, hardware, welding and finishing. Its markup is applied to the calculated operation cost once; if your brake rate is already a selling rate, choose zero markup here or follow a documented shop-wide pricing policy. Save actual setup and run minutes separately to improve the next release.
