Price waterjet time and abrasive on the same basis

Waterjet cost combines occupied machine time, setup and abrasive consumed during cutting and piercing. The default example cuts a 36-inch profile through half-inch plate with four pierces, one handling minute and a separate garnet allowance. The calculator shows the operating cost and the selling price after your selected markup.

Waterjet service cost and selling price
Catalog speed is min(60, 2.2 × factor ÷ max(0.04, thickness)^1.15) in/min. Add pierces × (0.1 + thickness × 0.25) minutes and one handling minute. Garnet runs during cutting and piercing, not handling. If your rate already includes garnet, set its separate cost to zero. Stock, finish and freight are excluded.
| Item | Result |
|---|---|
| Run time per part | 9.27 min |
| Garnet per part | $3.48 |
| Machine cost per part | $14.68 |
| Setup per lot | $31.67 |
| Total cost per lot | $213.25 |
| Selling price per part | $27.72 |
Treat cut quality as an input decision
The published time relation is a catalog estimating model, not a machine manufacturer’s production cut chart. It slows the cut as thickness increases and uses an editable material factor. Actual pressure, nozzle condition, abrasive feed, taper requirements, corner quality and edge specification can change the proven speed. Validate the model against a comparable job before committing a difficult plate part. A profile’s total perimeter includes internal features, and every separate start may add a pierce, so a bounding rectangle alone is insufficient.
Do not pay for garnet twice
This calculator’s $95 hourly input is an illustrative machine cost excluding garnet. Abrasive is charged for cut and pierce minutes at the entered pounds per minute and delivered dollars per pound. Handling consumes machine time but no modeled garnet. The product catalog also has a bundled waterjet rate that includes abrasive; if you use a bundled rate, set the separate garnet cost to zero. Mixing that bundled rate with another full abrasive allowance overstates the same operating expense.
Separate a cutting service from a complete part
Stock, deburring, secondary machining, finish, packaging and freight are excluded. Enter setup once for the lot and check whether a small-job minimum should raise the result. If the customer supplies plate, agree on usable condition, thickness, material identity and responsibility for a failed pierce before accepting the job. Markup applies once to the modeled cost. A cost rate and a selling rate have different meanings; use zero extra markup when the selected rate already contains the intended return and that matches your shop’s policy.
