How much does it cost to machine titanium?

Titanium cost is driven by both the blank and the time needed to remove it. The US catalog used here prices Ti-6Al-4V at $32.53/lb and gives it a 0.15 machinability factor relative to 6061-T6. The tables run the same reference bracket and stepped pin in titanium and 6061 at quantity 1, 10, and 100 so the two effects stay visible.

The blank and the cut both move
The reference bracket starts as 1.25-inch plate and leaves a pocket, holes, and two setups for the pricing model to price. Titanium's catalog stock input is much higher than 6061's. Its lower machinability factor also lengthens the same removal and drilling terms in the generated milling operation.
This is why multiplying an aluminum quote by a fixed rule of thumb is weak estimating. The table recomputes material and run time for each grade, then applies the same setup and markup assumptions.
- Confirm whether the buyer means annealed or heat-treated Ti-6Al-4V.
- Ask for the stock form and bought blank size.
- Keep tool wear and coolant strategy in the estimator's review notes.
Read the quantity breaks
At quantity one, CAM, workholding, and inspection are lot costs. At 100 pieces, those minutes spread across the lot, while the titanium cycle-time factor still applies to each part. The unit-price difference therefore usually grows or shrinks with geometry: a near-net blank can reduce removal, while a deep pocket can make cutting time dominate.
The pricing model output is a repeatable example, not a quote for a real aerospace part. Replace the fictional features, material condition, and shop rate before committing.
- Show the lot total next to the unit price.
- Do not hide first-piece approval in the cycle time.
- Review chip control, tool engagement, and workholding with the machinist.
What this page does not claim
No single machinability number covers every tool, speed, feed, coating, or machine. The factor here is the US catalog's estimating input, held constant so the price comparison is auditable. It is not a recommended cutting chart and it does not replace the toolmaker's data.
A good titanium quote also names inspection, traceability, and any outside process. Those can be added as explicit lines once the customer drawing calls them out.
- Source the material price and date.
- State exclusions such as certification and freight.
- Use measured cycle time after the first run to update the shop's rate.
Use the result as an estimator's starting point
For this cost to machine ti-6al-4v: a transparent cnc example example, an estimator can challenge every cnc milling and turning input. Replace this fictional geometry with the customer's STEP file or drawing, then replace the catalog stock price, work-center rate, setup minutes, and markup with the shop's current 3-axis vmc and cnc lathe values.
Keep the lot setup visible when you send this quote for cost to machine ti-6al-4v: a transparent cnc example. Confirm stock form, material condition, tolerances, inspection, deburr, and outside-process timing before promising a ship date. If one of those inputs changes, rerun the calculation and show the buyer what moved.
- Show both unit and lot totals.
- Label illustrative values clearly.
- Have the estimator review access, tooling, and first-piece risk.
Same milled bracket, Ti-6Al-4V versus 6061, from the US engine
- • Material: Titanium Ti-6Al-4V; the US catalog input is $71.70/lb and machinability 0.15 relative to 6061-T6.
- • Process: CNC milling and turning; the pricing model includes CAM programming, 12 toolpaths, Mill, 3 setups, Handling and tool changes, 3 lb stock, Deburr, Inspect and calculates the quantities shown.
- • Geometry: 4 × 3 × 1 in; Fictional 4 × 3 × 1 in prismatic reference part. Two mill setups are inferred from the top and side features.
- • Markup: 30% catalog default. Taxes, freight, customer-specific rates, and unlisted outside services are excluded.
- • Every dollar and minute in the table is a reproducible example from the stated inputs, not a market average or supplier promise.

Sources and limits
Claims are dated where they can change. Product calculations are examples from the stated inputs, not a promise about a customer's quote. Competitor wording is attributed to the source shown.
- The stock price input is taken from the US catalog, which records an Online Metals check on 2026-10-21. — source (checked 2026-10-21)

Questions
Is this a guaranteed ti-6al-4v titanium quote?
No. It is a transparent estimating example. Replace the example inputs with the customer's drawing, stock quote, current shop rates, and inspection or finish requirements.
Why does quantity change the unit price?
Setup and programming are lot costs. The pricing calculation spreads those costs across the stated quantity and keeps the per-part run time and material inputs visible.
