How much does passivation cost for stainless parts?

Your part priced in about 90 seconds, no account.

The catalog passivation allowance for this small 316 fitting is $99.75 for one, $9.98 each at ten and $1.00 each at 100 before shop markup. A $95 lot minimum and 5% fee dominate these quantities. If your vendor adds the lot and piece charge together, use the explicitly additive table instead.

What the default invoice calculation includes

The reference fitting is two inches long, one-inch OD and half-inch through bore. Passivation uses a $2 piece allowance scaled by part surface area, with a 20% lower bound. The default rule takes the larger of the piece total and $95 process minimum, then applies 5%. It does not add $95 to every lot's piece total.

The final table column shows the result after a separate 30% shop markup. That markup is an example commercial choice, not a finisher's published surcharge. Turning the fitting, shipping it, specialized cleaning, certificates and inspection tests are excluded. This narrow scope lets an estimator see the effect of the outside minimum without confusing it with machining.

Check the supplier's wording before choosing a rule

Makplate's price list, dated January 1, 2026 and checked October 30, lists $95 as a passivation minimum and states a 5% waste-management fee on invoices. That supports the minimum and fee used here. It does not publish this example's $2 size-scaled piece assumption or promise that every fitting can be processed for the minimum.

A vendor agreement that truly charges $95 lot plus pieces produces the second result below. The geometry and fee are held constant so the invoice structure is the only change. Keeping both interpretations visible is more useful than silently treating a minimum as a setup charge. Get the written vendor quote for a firm customer order.

A passivation line must carry its acceptance requirement

Tell the processor the alloy, incoming surface condition, applicable specification, method, required test and paperwork. A generic process label does not establish that a customer's drawing has been satisfied. Oil, embedded contamination or a prior operation may require preparation beyond the nominal bath charge.

Define whether plugs must be removed, whether solution can drain from internal passages and what packaging protects the cleaned part. A fitting delivered individually bagged with traceable records is a different handling scope from loose production parts returned in a bin. Quote those deliverables when required instead of inferring that they come with the minimum.

For a ten-part order, coordinating a compatible lot can spread fixed cost. It should not mix revisions or compromise identification. Check the actual invoice after the job; replace assumed piece pricing and fees with the supplier's demonstrated rule. On repeat work, preserve the passivation purchase order and acceptance documentation beside the machining traveler.
