Swiss and screw machine quoting software
Swiss and Davenport quoting software for screw machine shops
Swiss quoting software has to price four things on their own: the bar each part uses, a setup measured in hours, a cycle measured in seconds, and the secondaries. QuotedPart reads the STEP model and the PDF print and does that on your own rates in under 20 seconds: our worked Ti-6Al-4V medical pin comes to $3.72 each at 1,000 and $2.73 at 10,000 on a $110/h Swiss, and a 12L14 bushing to $1.34 and $0.51 on a Davenport.

The screw machine shop it fits
Sliding-headstock Swiss lathes with bar feeders, and in some shops a row of cam multi-spindles (Davenport Model B, Acme-Gridley, New Britain, Wickman). The work is pins, screws, bushings, contacts and medical or dental components, in lots from a few hundred to six figures, often on blanket orders with releases.
Here a quote is won or lost on seconds and inches. A cycle that is two seconds long, or a cut-off blade that is wider than the estimate assumed, moves the price more on a 10,000 lot than any feature on the print. The estimator needs the cycle, the bar and the setup shown separately so each can be checked against what the machine really does.
What it reads and how it routes
- From the STEP model: diameters, steps, length, bores, grooves, cross holes and flats. Cross holes and flats become live-tool work on the Swiss, or a secondary on a mill after the Davenport.
- From the PDF print: material, tolerances, threads, finish and notes. A .0005 in diameter tolerance, a 16 Ra finish on a diameter or a grind note adds OD grinding.
- Bar stock: the next standard round, hex or square size over the part, with facing, cut-off and a share of each bar's remnant, at your bar prices.
- Swiss routing: a small turned part with several features goes to the Swiss; in lots of 100 and up, so does a long, slender part or one cut from hex or square bar, up to 1-1/4 in across.
- Davenport routing, once you add the Davenport in Settings > Processes: a round part with bar up to 7/8 in, up to 3 in long, in a lot of at least your Davenport minimum (1,000 to start).
- Swiss cycle from the removed volume, bores, holes and grooves, with a quantity curve that stops at 10,000; Davenport cycle as the slowest station plus the index, with no curve.
Worked example
A Swiss pin and a Davenport bushing at 1,000 and 10,000
Two fictional parts, priced by our pricing engine at the US starting rates. The pin carries an estimator's traceability allowance; the bushing runs on a shop that has added the Davenport. Bar, setup and cycle are shown so you can check each against your own machines.
Swiss: a titanium medical pin
A Ø0.250 × 1.500 in Ti-6Al-4V pin with one Ø1/16 in cross hole and one groove, ±0.001 in on the diameter. The live tool drills the cross hole in the same cycle, so the pin comes off the Swiss finished apart from deburr and inspection. We added the same traceability allowance as our Swiss medical pin cost guide: 60 minutes of inspection setup, 0.75 minute a pin and $120 a lot for records.
| Operation | Work center | Rate | Setup min per lot | Run min per pin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAM programming | CAM programming | $95.00 | 18.6 | 0.00 |
| Swiss turn | Swiss lathe | $110.00 | 120.0 | 0.40 |
| Live tooling, 1 feature | Swiss lathe | $110.00 | 15.0 | 0.30 |
| Deburr | Deburr / bench | $55.00 | 5.0 | 0.20 |
| Inspect | Inspection | $75.00 | 15.5 | 0.10 |
| Lot traceability and enhanced inspection | Inspection | $75.00 | 60.0 | 0.75 |
| Pins | Ti bar | Setup and programming | Machine and labor | Swiss s/pin | Price each | Order total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $0.61 | $0.38 | $1.76 | 29.6 | $3.72 | $3,720.00 |
| 10,000 | $0.61 | $0.04 | $1.44 | 25.2 | $2.73 | $27,300.00 |
The 234 minutes of setup, programming and first-article work cost $375.91 once, which is $0.38 a pin at 1,000 and $0.04 at 10,000. What's left at volume is spindle time: 25.2 seconds of turning and live-tool work per pin at $110.00 an hour, about 143 pins an hour and 70 spindle hours for the 10,000 lot. That is why the price only falls from $3.72 to $2.73: ten times the pins buys a 27% lower price, not a tenth of it.
Davenport: a 12L14 bushing
A 0.800 in long 12L14 bushing, Ø0.375 in with a Ø0.250 in step, a Ø0.125 in through bore, one groove and one Ø1/16 in cross hole. All five spindles cut during the same dwell, so the cycle is the slowest station plus a 0.4-second index, not the sum of the operations.
| Station | Seconds |
|---|---|
| Form (turned-away volume) | 0.85 |
| Groove (cross-slide plunge) | 0.90 |
| Drill (split over two end-working positions) | 1.41 |
| Thread (tap or die) | 0.00 |
| Cut-off (the radius) | 1.76 |
| Index and tool approach | 0.40 |
| Cycle: slowest station + index | 2.16 |
| Bushings | Davenport cycle s | Davenport price each | Swiss s/part | Swiss price each | Davenport cycle hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 2.16 | $1.34 | 25.4 | $1.72 | 0.6 |
| 10,000 | 2.16 | $0.51 | 21.6 | $1.11 | 6.0 |
The cut-off is the slowest station at 1.76 seconds, so 1.76 + 0.4 gives a 2.16-second cycle, about 1,666 bushings an hour. Cams, changeover, the secondary's setup and first-article inspection come to $640.21 per lot, so at 1,000 the Davenport is $1.34 each against $1.72 on the Swiss; at 10,000 the same setup is spread ten times thinner and the Davenport comes to $0.51 against $1.11. The cams pace the machine, so the cycle is priced flat at every quantity. The 1/16 in cross hole can't be drilled on a standard Model B, so it is a secondary on a mill, priced as its own operation.
Bar-feed maths for both parts
| Part | Bar | Bar per part, in | Parts per bar | Bars for 1,000 | Bars for 10,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ti medical pin (Swiss) | 5/16 in round Ti-6Al-4V | 1.697 | 81 | 13 | 124 |
| 12L14 bushing (Davenport) | 7/16 in round 12L14 | 0.997 | 138 | 8 | 73 |
Each part takes its own length plus 0.079 in to face and a 0.118 in cut-off, and the bar is the next standard size that leaves stock to clean up on the largest diameter. The remnant the bar feeder can't push is shared by the parts from that bar. In 12L14 the bar is a few cents a bushing; in titanium it is $0.61 a pin, so the cut-off width and the remnant matter far more on the pin.

Your proven cycles, and where the quote goes
- Type a cycle you've proven over the computed one. The quote moves by exactly those seconds at the work center's rate, plus markup, on every part, and the edit stays marked.
- If your Swiss drills the cross hole while the main spindle turns, shorten the live-tool step: the starting routing adds it to the turning time.
- Every quantity break is priced on its own, so a 1,000-piece release and a 10,000-piece blanket sit on one quote with the setup spread correctly in each.
- Send to JobBOSS² with routing and up to 8 quantity breaks, or export quotes and orders as CSV or Excel for E2, ProShop, Global Shop or anything else.
Price for a screw machine shop
- $399/month per shop ($199 for the first 20 shops), per shop: not per machine, per estimator or per quote. The Davenport routing is part of it.
- 14-day trial with every feature, no card and no contract. Quote a part you already run and compare our cycle and bar with yours.

FAQ
What shops ask first
Yes, since November 5, 2026. Add the Davenport in Settings > Processes and round parts that fit its bar and length go there at production lots. The cycle is the slowest of the stations that cut at once plus the index, the cams and changeover are charged per lot, and the cycle is priced flat at every quantity because the cams pace the machine.
How to quote Davenport partsA small turned part with several features goes to the Swiss; long, slender parts and hex or square bar also go there in lots of 100 and up, up to 1-1/4 in across. With a Davenport added, a round part up to 7/8 in bar and 3 in long goes to the Davenport once the lot reaches your Davenport minimum, 1,000 to start. You can switch any part's routing yourself.
How to quote Swiss partsBy the inch of bar each part uses: its length plus facing and cut-off, plus its share of the remnant the bar feeder can't push, at your bar price for the next standard size over the part. If you bought the bar at a different price, type your own material cost per part.
Parts per bar calculatorProcess validation, cleaning, passivation, particle limits, sterile packaging, test reports and a certified bar specification are not in the worked pin. The traceability line is an estimator's allowance for lot records and extra checks; enter your own minutes and lot charge for what the customer's quality agreement asks for.
