Costimator vs aPriori: operation estimates or wider simulation?

Your part priced in about 90 seconds, no account.

Compare Costimator and aPriori on the manufacturing decision you need to make. Costimator documents feature-based operation cost models for shop estimating and should-cost work. aPriori documents manufacturing simulation and digital-factory data spanning design, quoting and sourcing. Both can be relevant to an estimator; it is inaccurate to call one only a shop tool and the other only a buyer tool. Neither current pricing page supports a public dollar-price winner.

Use the published scope to design the trial

MTI's home and demo/pricing pages and aPriori's home and packaging pages were checked October 30, 2026. Costimator offers an optional 3DFX solid-model feature-recognition add-on, along with a specialist-led demo using your parts. aPriori's Quote package describes model-based costing and cycle-time drivers; its other packages extend into design comparisons, supplier digital factories and automation.

Separate a method difference from a rate difference

Consider a fictional steel block with $25 stock and two hours of setup at $100/hour per lot. At 20 pieces, setup is $10 each. A proposed 15-minute cycle at $100/hour adds $25, giving $60 cost per piece before inspection, finish and profit. If another method needs 20 minutes at the same rate, cost becomes $68.3333 each. That difference is about the method.

If both methods use 15 minutes but one rate is $140/hour, setup becomes $280 per lot or $14 each, and run cost becomes $35: total is $74 each. That difference is about the rate basis. Ask both vendors to explain those two cases independently. A single total cannot reveal whether a simulation changed machine selection, cycle time, overhead or all three.

Choose evidence that matches your estimator

A shop wanting operation-level costs should have its estimator inspect the proposed setups, cutting assumptions, tooling and secondary work. A design or sourcing team should compare at least two manufacturing methods and explain which factory data applies. aPriori's broader simulation and digital-factory scope is a meaningful strength for that second task; Costimator's explicit cost-model and ERP-export workflow is a meaningful reason to test it for shop estimating.

Require a known closed job and a new drawing in the trial. The closed job checks calibration; the unfamiliar part checks scope recognition. Deliberately add a drawing note that changes inspection or outside processing while keeping the solid model the same. Keep human review visible instead of treating either vendor's marketing accuracy language as a measured result on your own work.

Compare complete configurations and responsibilities

Get written proposals for users, add-ons, data maintenance, training and the required handoff. Do not assume that a file export creates a supported end-to-end integration. QuotedPart is a third option only for the narrower PDF/model-to-customer-quote workflow at one shop's rates. It does not replace digital-factory simulation or a broad library of specialized manufacturing models; assess those needs before comparing entry subscriptions.

Sources and limits

Claims are dated where they can change. Product calculations are examples from the stated inputs, not a promise about a customer's quote. Competitor wording is attributed to the source shown.
