aPriori alternative: shop quotes or manufacturing simulation?

Your part priced in about 90 seconds, no account.
QuotedPart can be an aPriori alternative for the narrower task of preparing customer quotes from PDF drawings and STEP models at one shop's rates. It does not replace aPriori's documented digital-factory simulation, design comparisons or sourcing analysis. aPriori also explicitly offers a Quote use case, so it would be unfair to describe it as only a procurement tool. Choose by the decisions you need to make and the cost data you can maintain.

Identify the decision and its owner
aPriori's current site and packaging pages, checked October 30, 2026, describe manufacturing simulation for design, sourcing and estimating. Its packages distinguish Design, Quote, Source and Automate. Quote covers model-based costing and cycle-time drivers; Source includes supplier digital factories and regional data. The pricing page requests a proposal rather than showing a dollar subscription.
| Decision | What aPriori documents | What to test in a shop estimator |
|---|---|---|
| Design alternative | Manufacturing simulation and design comparison | Price the changed drawing; preserve assumptions |
| Supplier discussion | Digital-factory and regional data | Use your actual local cost basis |
| Customer RFQ | 3D-model costing and process coverage | Read the print, edit the route and send the quote |
| Cross-team analysis | Design, source and automation packages | Approval and export needs at your shop |
A should-cost figure is only as local as its inputs
Suppose a fictional machined housing requires $30 material, $200 setup per lot and 20 minutes of machining per piece. At 25 pieces and $90/hour, cost is $30 + $8 + $30 = $68 each before inspection, finish, freight and profit. At $150/hour, with setup also priced at that rate, two hours of setup become $300 per lot: cost is $30 + $12 + $50 = $92 each.
The $24 difference comes from stated shop-rate assumptions, not a change in geometry or proof that one estimate is wrong. If your supplier has different machines, loading or tooling, the method may also change. Use simulation to expose a discussion, then reconcile the assumptions with the person responsible for making the part. Do not call the lower number an achievable selling price without checking scope and margin.
Where aPriori is the stronger choice
A team comparing manufacturing processes, supplier locations or designs across a broad set of commodities has a reason to evaluate aPriori's simulation and digital-factory data. Recreating those datasets in a small shop estimator would be a separate project. Conversely, a shop mainly responding to drawing RFQs may value the shortest reliable path from files to an approved customer quote.
Ask for one representative part in the proposed aPriori package and verify how the factory's machines, rates and material sources are maintained. Then run a revised model with a tolerance change documented only in the drawing. The manufacturing decision must account for both geometry and requirements; a model alone cannot prove complete quote scope.
Choose without an invented price comparison
Request aPriori's scoped proposal, including the use case, data, users and implementation. Compare it with the value of the actual decision, not just the number of quotes sent. QuotedPart is $199/month per shop with a 14-day no-card trial for reviewed estimating. aPriori's broader simulation capability may justify a different budget; public evidence does not support pretending the two subscriptions buy the same work.
Sources and limits
Claims are dated where they can change. Product calculations are examples from the stated inputs, not a promise about a customer's quote. Competitor wording is attributed to the source shown.
