Is Epicor Kinetic quoting enough, or should you add an estimator?

Kinetic's built-in quoting is a sensible starting point if your manufacturing method is already defined. Epicor lists estimating and quotation management, RFQ tracking and order management in Sales Management; it lists product CPQ separately. A configurable product and a new customer drawing need different demonstrations. For the example assembly below, spreading $360 of engineering and setup over 3 rather than 30 units changes that contribution from $120 to $12 per assembly. Test that behavior before adding another estimating system.

Do not confuse a configurator with a drawing estimate
Epicor's Sales Management page, checked October 30, 2026, distinguishes estimating/quotation management from Configure Price Quote. The former tracks requests through ordering; the latter uses rules to configure a product. Neither label by itself proves that a shop can upload an unfamiliar PDF and receive a complete, checked manufacturing method.
For a family of pump skids, configuration rules might choose motor options, frame sizes and purchased components. For an unfamiliar machined housing, the estimator needs to interpret datums, workholding, internal features and inspection. Make the supplier demonstrate the path your RFQs actually take, including work outside the sales screen. Do not mark a capability absent simply because the overview does not explain it.
| RFQ | What the demo must prove | What to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Configured repeat product | Options generate valid components and operations | Rules, selected options and cost basis |
| New drawing | Estimator derives and edits a manufacturing method | Revision, assumptions and operation minutes |
| Repeat with changed quantity | Setup remains per lot; run cost scales | Break quantities and approved prices |
| Won quote | Commercial details reach the order correctly | Currency, revision, terms and commitments |
A quantity test for a fabricated assembly
Assume a fictional welded guard costs $95 in cut stock and purchased hardware, plus 45 minutes of fabrication at $80/hour, per assembly. Engineering and workholding setup add $360 per lot. Before finish, freight, tax or profit, variable cost is $95 + $60 = $155 each. Three guards cost $825 total, or $275 each; 30 cost $5,010 total, or $167 each.
Apply a 30% markup to those costs: $357.50 each at three and $217.10 each at 30. These are explicit example inputs, not Epicor output. Ask who owns material prices, where engineering is charged and whether the order receives the correct production quantity. If the drawing requires a machined mounting face after welding, add that operation rather than hiding it in a margin adjustment.
Keep the ERP benefits in the decision
Kinetic's published scope includes financials, production, supply chain and scheduling. Those functions are stronger than QuotedPart's quoting-only workflow when the problem spans production and finance. A separate estimator should preserve those benefits by handing over approved information rather than creating a competing item master.
QuotedPart is relevant when the slow step is extracting drawing information and producing a reviewed price at shop rates. There is no advertised QuotedPart-to-Kinetic push to assume here; plan a validated export/import or controlled re-entry. Measure the extra handoff against the time saved on new parts. If Kinetic already gives the estimator a good method quickly, keep one workflow.
Sources and limits
Claims are dated where they can change. Product calculations are examples from the stated inputs, not a promise about a customer's quote. Competitor wording is attributed to the source shown.
