The report calculates lower and upper size limits and compares a measured value inclusively against them. A one-inch feature with minus 0.005 and plus 0.002 passes from 0.995 through 1.002 inches; 1.003 fails. An empty measurement remains pending. Record the measurement context
The header needs part and drawing revision, job, lot or serial identity, inspector, date and the inspection plan reference. Each characteristic row identifies the drawing sheet and zone, nominal value, separate positive and negative size allowances, units, result and gage reference. The example PDF is fictional and for training; replace its requirements with the controlled customer drawing before using the sheet on a real job. Never mix inch and millimeter measurements in the same unconverted row.
Know what the pass/fail cell can judge
Lower limit is nominal minus the entered negative allowance; upper limit is nominal plus the positive allowance. Both boundary values are accepted. Blank cells produce pending instead of treating an empty result as zero. This logic handles ordinary bilateral or unilateral size limits. It does not evaluate true position, profile, datum simulation, thread acceptance, surface texture or measurement uncertainty. Use the appropriate qualified inspection method for those requirements and record the report reference rather than forcing them into a simple size comparison.
Preserve failures and reviewer decisions
A failing result should remain visible while the shop follows its disposition process. Do not expand the tolerance or overwrite the reading to turn the cell green. If a customer accepts a deviation, retain the approval reference beside the actual result and identify the affected serials or lot. The report is not a calibration system and does not prove the instrument is suitable. Check equipment status and resolution before measuring. For a contractual first article, use the full required accountability package and accepted forms rather than assuming that a routine dimensional sheet is sufficient.
