Prepare the evidence before filling the FAI forms

Your part priced in about 90 seconds, no account.

A first-article package needs part identity, material and process evidence, and results tied to drawing characteristics. The Excel companion organizes those three groups and includes a six-balloon example. Use the customer-required official form revision for submission; this preparation workbook is not an official AS9102 form or a claim of conformity.

Use the companion without mislabeling it

The part-accountability tab records drawing and part revisions, serial identity, manufacturing reference, full or partial scope and approval references. The product-accountability tab collects material heats, specification revisions, special-process suppliers and certificate references. The characteristic tab ties each sample balloon to its requirement, measurement, inspection equipment and result. These are preparation fields to reduce missing evidence. Confirm the contract, purchased standard and required submission method before transcribing the information to the customer’s accepted forms.

Follow the six sample balloons

The fictional training plate has six numbered characteristics: length, width, thickness, hole diameter and two hole-center locations. The PDF and workbook share those numbers. Ordinary size limits use explicit plus and minus tolerances; the example does not teach GD&T evaluation or replace a qualified measurement plan. A blank measured value stays pending. Keep material and finish requirements in the accountability record even when they are evidenced by certificates rather than a caliper reading.

Quote report work separately from the first good part

Budget drawing review and ballooning, characteristic planning, measurement, certificate review, report preparation and customer submission. Thirty characteristics at two minutes each plus 45 minutes preparation is 105 minutes; at an example $75 inspection rate, that is $131.25 before markup or special equipment time. It is an arithmetic illustration, not a standard allowance. A partial repeat FAI still requires a defined scope and approval basis. Do not remove the entire inspection charge just because an earlier revision had a completed report.

Sources and limits

Claims are dated where they can change. Product calculations are examples from the stated inputs, not a promise about a customer's quote. Competitor wording is attributed to the source shown.
