Laser cutting quoting software: test pierces, yield and minimums

A laser cutting shop should choose quoting software that reproduces its material allocation, pierce time and machine minimum on real flat patterns. Start with Tempus Tools, CutQuote, SecturaFAB, Lantek or SigmaQUOTE if a nest connected to cutting is central to your work. A reviewed estimator can fit mixed work, but QuotedPart does not nest. In the example below, overlooking 200 pierces at two seconds each removes 6.67 minutes, or $20 at the assumed $180/hour machine rate.

Match the system to how cutting reaches production
Vendor descriptions were checked October 30, 2026. Tempus Tools documents DXF/DWG quoting and material charging by sheet/yield. CutQuote advertises true-shape nesting on all plans. SecturaFAB describes nesting, machine times and configurable rules. Lantek links quoting with CAD/CAM, while SigmaQUOTE uses production-related inventory, remnant and time data. These are reasons to demonstrate the tools, not proof of a measured accuracy ranking.
| Workflow need | Products to demonstrate | Evidence you should request |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing cleanup and daily flat quoting | Tempus Tools; CutQuote | Clean geometry, cut path and pricing on a flawed DXF |
| Configurable metals estimating | SecturaFAB | Your material tech table and added operations |
| Connected Lantek cutting environment | Lantek Integra Quotes | Same material and geometry through quote and production |
| SigmaTEK production data | SigmaQUOTE | Remnant/material policy and process-plan cost |
| Drawing-led mixed-process quote | QuotedPart | Reviewed minutes; independent nest for material yield |
A plate test with visible arithmetic
Use ten fictional 0.25 in A36 plates, each with 40 in of total cut and 20 pierces. Assume 80 in/min effective cutting speed, two seconds per pierce, ten minutes setup and a $180/hour loaded laser rate. Cutting is 400 / 80 = 5 minutes; piercing is 200 × 2 / 60 = 6.6667 minutes. Total machine time is 21.6667 minutes and machine cost is $65.
Give the lot $90 material from your approved nest and six minutes of deburring at $60/hour, or $6. Cost is $161; with a 25% markup the quote is $201.25, or $20.125 each before rounding. This deliberately simple worksheet excludes gas billed separately, consumables not already in the loaded rate, freight and tax. It is not any vendor's calculation.
Change the input that usually breaks your estimate
Run the same geometry in stainless, then double the thickness and change the sheet size. Use machine data for those cases rather than carrying over the sample cutting speed. Check lead-ins, small-hole slowdowns, edge quality and whether microtabs add bench work. A nominal rapid speed is not a defensible cutting rate.
Next quote a single plate. If your minimum charge is $75, ask whether that is a floor on selling price or an added setup charge. Then switch to customer-supplied stock and confirm who bears unusable-sheet risk. Finally, ask production to inspect the accepted quote's geometry and nest. If your estimator and operator must recreate the same decisions independently, include that effort in the purchase comparison.
Sources and limits
Claims are dated where they can change. Product calculations are examples from the stated inputs, not a promise about a customer's quote. Competitor wording is attributed to the source shown.
