Is MIE Trak Pro quoting good enough, or do I need separate quoting software?

MIE Trak Pro is likely enough when your estimator needs a quote tied to material, labor, routing, outside services and later estimate-versus-actual job costing. MIE's current product pages describe personalized formulas, win/loss tracking and quotes based on true costing data. A separate quoting tool becomes useful when the bottleneck is CAD/PDF intake, rapid one-off estimates or a remote estimator who should not edit ERP master data. Before buying, price the same RFQ in MIE and in the separate tool, then test how the accepted quote becomes a sales order without double entry.

What MIE Trak Pro already covers
MIE's RFQ module centralizes requests, assigns items to estimators and supports an approval process. Its quoting module creates detailed quotes for single details and complex assemblies with operations, bills of material and tooling. The vendor also describes sales orders created from RFQs and an ERP workflow that continues into scheduling, work orders, inventory and accounting. That is a meaningful strength: the quote's assumptions can remain connected to the job instead of being copied from a spreadsheet.
For a 1018 steel shaft, price the setup, turning, keyway, outside heat treat and inspection in MIE. If the shop's routing and rate tables are maintained, a quote of $1,860 at quantity 10 can become a job with the same operations. Record how a changed material price or a customer revision updates the estimate and what approval is required before release.
| Need | What the vendor says | Proof in your demo |
|---|---|---|
| RFQ control | RFQs can be assigned and approved before submission. | Route one RFQ to two estimators and compare revisions. |
| Cost detail | Quotes include operations, BOMs and tooling. | Show setup, run, outside service and scrap separately. |
| Formula control | Formulas can be personalized and use true costing data. | Change a machine rate and show the quote audit trail. |
| Job handoff | Sales orders can be created from RFQs. | Accept a quote and follow it into scheduling and a work order. |
When a separate tool earns its keep
Add a separate quoting tool when MIE is the right system for production but not the fastest place to interpret a customer drawing. A focused tool can let an estimator work from a STEP model and PDF, use a shop-rate template, and export a quote while MIE remains the system of record. That is a process choice, not a claim that MIE cannot quote. Define the handoff fields first: customer, part number, revision, quantity, unit price, due date, material, outside service and notes.
QuotedPart can handle the rate-based front end at $199 per shop per month, but it does not create an MIE-native sales order. The shop would export and enter or map the accepted quote. If that manual step takes five minutes and occurs twice a day, it may be acceptable; if it occurs forty times, an integration project is justified.
Decision rule
Keep quoting in MIE when the estimator already has the right routing and the production handoff is the risk you are trying to remove. Trial a separate tool when the estimator spends more time measuring drawings and rebuilding assumptions than deciding whether to win the work. In either case, compare estimate versus actual after the first three jobs. A faster quote that hides setup or outside-process cost is not a faster estimating system; it is a delayed variance report.
MIE is stronger on quote-to-cash continuity. A separate quoting layer can be stronger on a light, repeatable RFQ intake. Use the one that lets your shop explain why the number changed and carry that explanation into production.
Sources and limits
Claims are dated where they can change. Product calculations are examples from the stated inputs, not a promise about a customer's quote. Competitor wording is attributed to the source shown.
